Then make your move.

A mutual fund brings money from many investors into a portfolio of assets such as shares, bonds or money-market instruments. Professional fund managers manage the portfolio in line with the scheme’s stated objective.

Your investment is represented by units. Their value reflects the scheme’s NAV, which can rise or fall.

Exposure depends on the scheme’s holdings and mandate. Understand the assets and concentration before you invest.

Bring your goal, time horizon and comfort with investment risk into the conversation.

Read beyond the headline return.

Look at the scheme documents, current risks, expenses and withdrawal conditions. Ask questions before committing.

Choose how you contribute

A regular habit.
Or a one-time start.

SIP and lump sum describe how you invest. They do not change the underlying scheme’s market exposure.

PERIODIC CONTRIBUTIONS

Systematic Investment Plan

A SIP lets you invest an amount at regular intervals into a chosen mutual fund scheme. It can help turn investing into a repeatable habit.

  • A contribution schedule instead of a single payment.
  • Units are purchased at the applicable NAV each time.
  • Regular investing still carries investment risk.

A SINGLE CONTRIBUTION

Lump-sum investment

Invest an available amount in one transaction rather than spreading contributions over a schedule. The full amount takes the scheme’s exposure from the investment date.

  • A one-time contribution into the chosen scheme.
  • Consider when you may need access to the money.
  • Market movements can affect the entire investment.

Categories are a starting point for understanding what a fund holds. Suitability depends on the specific scheme and your circumstances.

Help me understand the options

Equity funds

Invest mainly in shares. Their value is exposed to stock-market movements and the companies held in the portfolio.

Understand volatility and concentration.

Debt funds

Invest in debt and money-market instruments. Interest-rate changes, credit quality and liquidity can affect value.

Different from a fixed deposit.

Hybrid funds

Combine asset classes, commonly equity and debt. Allocation and risk vary with the scheme’s mandate.

A mix does not remove market risk.

What about index funds? These use a passive approach to track a stated index. Understand the index, expenses and tracking differences before choosing. The underlying index determines the exposure.

The selected return is an assumption, not a recommended or promised rate. This model uses a constant return and does not show market volatility. SIP uses monthly compounding of a nominal annual rate; lump sum uses annual compounding. Values may be higher or lower in practice, including losses. The model does not separately deduct scheme expenses, fees, tax or exit loads. It is not a substitute for reviewing a scheme’s documents.

Your first steps

A simple process.
A considered decision.

Gaurik can help you understand the process and the questions to ask before you begin.

01

Share your starting point.

Tell us what you are working towards, your time frame and the amount you are considering. Bring questions about risk and access to your money.

02

Understand the details.

Review the scheme information, investment route and applicable costs. Confirm the plan type and how any intermediary is compensated.

03

Confirm the process.

Check KYC status and the chosen provider’s requirements. Proceed through the appropriate investment channel only after you understand the terms.

Prepare for the documentation conversation.

KYC is required for mutual fund investing. Ask about identity and address information, bank details, nomination and investor declarations required for your case. Documents are not collected through this page.

Clarity before commitment

Four details.
A clearer view.

A return number is only part of the picture. Use the scheme documents and current disclosures to understand what you are choosing.

Investment risk

Values can fall. Review the current Riskometer, portfolio exposure and risks described in the scheme documents.

Ongoing expenses

Scheme expenses affect NAV. Compare the applicable expense disclosures for the particular plan and scheme.

Exit conditions

Check lock-ins, redemption rules and any exit load. Access to money varies across scheme structures.

Plan and compensation

Direct and Regular plans differ in expenses. Ask which plan you are considering and understand any distribution compensation.

What is a mutual fund?

A mutual fund pools money from investors into a portfolio managed according to the scheme’s objective. You hold units, and the value of your investment changes with the scheme’s net asset value (NAV).

Is SIP a different product from a mutual fund?

A SIP is a way to invest regularly in a mutual fund scheme. It describes the payment schedule, not a separate asset class. The underlying scheme determines the investment exposure and risks.

How much do I need to start?

Minimum investment amounts vary by scheme and transaction type. Ask for the chosen scheme’s current minimum for a SIP or a one-time investment. The calculator’s limits are for illustration and do not confirm a scheme’s eligibility.

Are mutual fund or SIP returns guaranteed?

No. Investment values can fall as well as rise, and you may lose capital. A SIP does not remove market risk. Neither the calculator nor past scheme performance promises future returns.

Can I withdraw my investment whenever I want?

Redemption depends on the scheme’s structure, transaction rules and any lock-in. Open-ended schemes generally allow redemption on business days, while other structures differ. Check applicable exit loads and tax treatment before withdrawing.

What is the difference between Direct and Regular plans?

They are plans of the same scheme with a common portfolio but different expenses and NAVs. Direct plans exclude distributor commissions and generally have lower expenses. Ask which plan is being offered and how the intermediary is compensated.

What documents should I prepare?

KYC is required for mutual fund investing. The exact process depends on your status and the chosen route. Identity and address information, bank-related details and other investor declarations may be required. Confirm the current checklist before applying.
